Modules

Each module is divided into a number of sections devoted to a different aspect of the issue together with examples and key references. By working through the modules you will achieve a higher level of understanding of urban air pollution.

Module 1

Urban Air Pollution in Asia

  Module1 - Click to download

Module 1 examines the causes of air pollution, the different types of air pollution which exist as well as the basic stages in air quality management system. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of the:

  • causes of air pollution
  • range of air pollutants and their impact
  • differences between indoor, outdoor and transboundary air pollution
  • concept of air quality management.

Module 2

Emissions

Module 2 - Emissions - Click to download

Module 2 examines the role of emissions inventories in air quality management and the different measures available to control emissions from different sources. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of the:

  • need for emissions inventories
  • different types of pollution sources
  • basic considerations required in developing an emission inventory
  • computer programs available to compile an emission inventory
  • measures available to control emission sources.

Module 3

Air Quality Modelling

  Module 3 Air Quality Modelling

Module 3 examines the basic components of an air simulation model which is used to estimate air pollutant concentrations in space and time. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of:

  • air pollution meteorology and modelling
  • box dispersion models
  • gaussian plume models
  • data requirements for dispersion models
  • source apportionment
  • receptor models.

Module 4

Air Quality Monitoring

  Module 3 Air Quality Modelling

Module 4 examines the different issues which need to be considered in the design of an air quality monitoring programme. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of the:

  • role of air quality monitoring as part of an air quality management system
  • factors which need to be considered in the design of a an air quality monitoring programme
  • different types of monitoring equipment available and their limitations
  • issues related to the interpretation of air quality data and air quality reporting.

Module 5

Air Pollution Impacts

  Module 3 Air Pollutant Impacts

Module 5 examines the impacts of common air pollutants on human health and the environment. In particular, you will learn about the methods used to study and assess the impact of air pollution on the health of a given population and the associated economic costs. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of:

  • the effect of key air pollutants on health
  • different approaches used to undertake health studies
  • information required to undertake health studies
  • approaches used to assess the economic impacts associated with air pollution and health
  • approaches used to manage indoor air pollution
  • environmental impacts of air pollution.

Module 6

Governance and Policies

  Module 6 Governance and Policies

Module 6 examines the issues which need to be addressed in an overall policy framework for clean air. At the end of the module you should have a better understanding of:

  • air quality guidelines and standards in Asia
  • clean air implementation plans
  • role of different stakeholders in achieving clean air
  • range of policy instruments available to implement air quality management objectives
  • institutional arrangements for air quality governance.

Strategic Framework for Air Quality Management in Asia

Strategic Framework for Air Quality Management In Asia

The Strategic Framework aims to assist countries and cities in Asia to develop and/or improve action to prevent further deterioration of air quality. The Strategic Framework is a broad high-level approach that is flexible and adaptable to the needs of different countries and cities. It is based on a set of guiding principles which include the 'precautionary' and 'polluter pays' principles, sustainability, stakeholder commitment, application of best practices, cost-effectiveness, risk awareness and access to environmental information. The Strategic Framework highlights the challenges existing in Asian cities and provides recommendations with respect to key components of a comprehensive air quality management system.
